{"id":2512084,"date":"2025-11-24T01:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T06:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/monetizemail.com\/magatoon\/?p=2512084"},"modified":"2025-11-24T08:53:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T13:53:02","slug":"americas-next-industrial-geography-wherever-the-power-is-cheap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monetizemail.com\/magatoon\/2025\/11\/24\/americas-next-industrial-geography-wherever-the-power-is-cheap\/","title":{"rendered":"America\u2019s Next Industrial Geography: Wherever the Power Is Cheap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Capitol Hill this week, five Democratic senators accused the Trump administration of \u201csweetheart deals with Big Tech\u201d that have \u201cdriven up power bills for ordinary Americans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their<a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/democrats-letter-ai-data-centers-electricity-prices\/\"> letter<\/a>, addressed to the White House, faulted the administration for allowing data-center operators to consume \u201cmassive new volumes of electricity without sufficient safeguards for consumers or the climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the senators\u2019 complaint points to a deeper reality neither party can ignore: artificial intelligence is changing America\u2019s energy economy <em>faster<\/em> than policy can adapt. Every conversation with ChatGPT, every AI-generated image, every search query now runs through vast new physical infrastructure \u2014 data centers \u2014 that consume more electricity than some nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s appetite for digital intelligence is colliding with its appetite for cheap, reliable power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New Industrial Landscape<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The anonymous-looking gray boxes\u2014bigger than football fields\u2014rising across Virginia, Texas, and the Arizona desert look like nothing special from the highway. Inside, however, they house the machinery of the new economy: tens of thousands of high-end processors performing trillions of calculations per second. These are the \u201cintelligence factories,\u201d where neural networks are trained, deployed, and refined \u2014 and where America\u2019s energy system is pushed to its limits and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople talk about the cloud as if it were ethereal,\u201d energy analyst Jason Bordoff said recently. \u201cBut it\u2019s as physical as a steel mill \u2014 and it runs on megawatts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/24\/what-we-know-about-energy-use-at-us-data-centers-amid-the-ai-boom\/\"> Pew Research Center<\/a>, US data centers consumed about 183 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024 \u2014 some 4 percent of total US power use, and about the same as Pakistan. By 2030, that figure could exceed 426 TWh, more than double today\u2019s level. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/electricity-2025\/executive-summary\"> International Energy Agency<\/a> (IEA) warns that, worldwide, data-center electricity demand will double again by 2026, growing four times faster than total global power demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The driver is artificial intelligence. Training and running large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and other models requires enormous computing clusters powered by specialized chips \u2014 notably Nvidia\u2019s graphics processing units (GPUs). Each new generation of AI systems multiplies power requirements. OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4 reportedly demanded tens of millions of dollars\u2019 worth of electricity just to train. Multiply that by hundreds of companies now racing to build their own AI models, and the implications for the grid are staggering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where the Power Is Going<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The American and global epicenter (for now) of this new build-out remains Loudoun County, Virginia \u2014 nicknamed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacentermap.com\/content\/nova\/\">Data Center Alley<\/a>\u201d \u2014 where nearly 30 percent of that county\u2019s electricity now flows to data facilities. Virginia\u2019s utilities estimate that data centers consume more than a quarter of the whole state\u2019s total generation.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in America, the story is similar. Microsoft\u2019s burgeoning data center complex near Des Moines has forced MidAmerican Energy to accelerate new natural-gas generation. Arizona Public Service now plans to build new substations near Phoenix to serve a cluster of AI facilities; Texas grid operator ERCOT says data centers will add 3 gigawatts of demand by 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the trend, by the way, isn\u2019t limited to <em>electricity<\/em>. Most facilities require water for cooling. A single \u201chyperscale\u201d campus can use billions of gallons per year, prompting local backlash in drought-prone regions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Political Blame Game<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Soaring demand has begun to translate into<a href=\"about:blank\"> electric-rate filings<\/a>. US utilities asked for $29 billion in rate increases in the first half of 2025, nearly double the total for the same period last year. Executives cite \u201cdata-center growth and grid reinforcement\u201d as drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And so, we get the letter from Senate Democrats \u2014 among them Elizabeth Warren and Sheldon Whitehouse \u2014 urging the Department of Energy to impose \u201cefficiency standards\u201d and \u201cconsumer protections\u201d before authorizing new power contracts for AI operators. \u201cWe cannot allow Silicon Valley\u2019s hunger for compute to be fed by higher bills in the heartland,\u201d they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration shot back a reply. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, \u201cThe president will not let bureaucrats throttle America\u2019s leadership in AI or its supply of affordable energy. If the choice is between progress and paralysis, he chooses progress.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That framing \u201cprogress versus paralysis\u201d captures the larger divide. The administration has prioritized energy abundance, reopening leasing on federal lands, greenlighting LNG export terminals, rolling back environmental restrictions of all kinds, and signaling renewed support for coal and nuclear power. Democrats, fixated on climate commitments, have continued to oppose expanded drilling in Alaska\u2019s Arctic and new offshore projects, while pressing for data centers to run on renewables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Powering the AI Boom<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Without continuous electricity, the AI boom falters. Nvidia, Microsoft, and OpenAI are already pushing the limits of available capacity. In April,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/shut-three-mile-island-nuclear-plant-may-restart-2027-owner-says-2025-06-25\/\"> Microsoft confirmed<\/a> it will buy power from the planned restart of the Three Mile Island Unit 1 reactor \u2014 mothballed since 2019 \u2014 to feed its growing data-center fleet in Pennsylvania. \u201cWe\u2019re essentially connecting a small city\u2019s worth of demand to the grid,\u201d said an energy executive involved in the project. \u201cData centers are an order of magnitude larger than anything we\u2019ve built for before.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That \u201csmall city\u201d reference is not an exaggeration. A single hyperscale facility can draw 100 megawatts \u2014 roughly the load of 80,000 households. Dozens of such projects are under construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while the industry\u2019s largest players are also buying wind and solar power contracts, they admit that renewables alone cannot meet the 24-hour load. \u201cWhen the model is training, you can\u2019t tell it to pause because the sun set,\u201d one data-center engineer quipped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Economics of Constraint<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>From an economic perspective, what matters is not only rising demand but constrained supply. Regulations restricting oil, gas, and pipeline development keep marginal electricity generation expensive. Permitting delays for transmission lines slows the build-out of new capacity. At the same time, federal subsidies distort investment toward intermittent sources that require backup generation \u2014 often natural gas \u2014 to stabilize the grid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A perfect storm of policy contradictions may be brewing: a government that wants both a carbon-neutral grid and dominance in energy-hungry AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe irony is that the very politicians demanding AI leadership are the ones making it harder to power,\u201d said economist<a href=\"about:blank\"> Stephen Moore<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t have artificial intelligence without real energy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a free market, higher demand would spur rapid expansion of supply. Investors would drill, build, and innovate to capture new profit opportunities. Instead, production and permitting are politically constrained, so prices must rise until demand is choked off. That is the dynamic now visible in electricity bills \u2014 and in the Senate\u2019s sudden search for someone to blame.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Global Race<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Complicating it all, to say the least, is the geopolitical dimension. China, the European Union, and the Gulf states are racing to build their own AI infrastructure. Beijing\u2019s Ministry of Industry announced plans for 50 new \u201cintelligent computing centers\u201d by 2027, powered largely by coal. In the Middle East, sovereign wealth funds are backing data-center projects co-located with gas fields to guarantee cheap electricity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the US restricts its own energy production, it risks ceding the field. \u201cEnergy is now the <a href=\"https:\/\/chem.libretexts.org\/Bookshelves\/Inorganic_Chemistry\/Supplemental_Modules_and_Websites_(Inorganic_Chemistry)\/Chemical_Reactions\/Limiting_Reagents\">limiting reagent<\/a> for AI,\u201d venture capitalist<a href=\"about:blank\"> Marc Andreessen<\/a> wrote this summer. \u201cWhichever country solves cheap, abundant power wins the century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That insight revives old debates about industrial policy. Should Washington subsidize domestic chip foundries and their power plants, or should it clear the regulatory thicket that deters private capital from building both? Innovation thrives on liberty, not mircomanagement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The New Factories<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Are data centers so different from factories of the industrial age? They convert raw inputs like electricity, silicon, cooling water, and capital into valuable outputs: trained models and real-time AI services. But unlike the factories of the past, they employ few workers directly. A billion-dollar hyperscale facility may have fewer than 200 staff. That does not sit well with the communities in which the vast data centers are located. The wealth is created upstream and downstream: in chip design, software, and the cascade of productivity gains AI enables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, the indirect productivity is vast. AI-driven logistics shave fuel costs, AI-assisted medicine accelerates diagnosis, and AI-powered coding tools raises output per worker. But all of it depends on those humming, appallingly noisy, heat-filled halls of servers. As OpenAI\u2019s Sam Altman remarked last year, \u201cA lot of the world gets covered in data centers over time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If true, America\u2019s next great industrial geography will not be steel towns or tech corridors, but the power corridor: regions anywhere that electricity is plentiful, cheap, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com\/p\/red-states-renewables\">politically welcome<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Already, states like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativetexansforenergyinnovation.org\/texas-is-building-a-city-for-the-ai-age-50000-acres-turned-into-a-hydrogen-powered-data-hub-aiming-to-redefine-americas-energy-future\/\">Texas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/atlanta\/2025\/08\/20\/georgia-electricity-costs-rise-data-center-ai-boom-power-bills\">Georgia<\/a> are advertising <a href=\"https:\/\/thebusinessdownload.com\/southern-wins-approval-on-big-spending-plan-as-ai-demands-new-power\/\">low-cost energy<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/19\/georgia-electricity-datacenters\">a lure<\/a> for AI investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Markets Versus Mandates<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>From a free-market perspective, the lesson is straightforward. Economic growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=33812\">follows energy freedom<\/a>. When government treats energy as a controlled substance \u2014 rationed through regulation, taxed for vice, or distorted by subsidies \u2014 innovation slows. When markets are allowed to meet demand naturally, abundance results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the early industrial age, the United States became the world\u2019s workshop because it embraced abundance: of coal, oil, and later electricity. Every new machine and factory depended on those resources, and entrepreneurs supplied them without central direction. Today\u2019s equivalent is the AI data center. Its prosperity depends on letting energy producers compete, invest, and innovate without political interference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Politics Ahead<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Over the next year, expect the power issue to dominate AI politics. Democrats will press for efficiency mandates and carbon targets; Republicans will frame energy freedom as essential to national strength. Federal officials already are discussing a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352484721007757\">\u201cclean AI\u201d certification<\/a> system tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/policyintegrity.org\/documents\/04.27.18_Policy_Integrity_CPP_Repeal_Proposal_Comments.pdf\">renewable sourcing<\/a> \u2014 critics say that could amount to a de facto quota on computer power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, utilities are rethinking grid design for a world where data centers behave like factories that never sleep. The market is responding: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/what-are-small-modular-reactors-smrs\">small, modular nuclear reactors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/netl.doe.gov\/carbon-management\/turbines\">advanced gas turbines<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fervoenergy.com\/\">geothermal projects<\/a> are attracting venture funding as potential baseload sources for AI campuses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For policymakers, the challenge is to resist the urge to micromanage. As AIER\u2019s scholarship often finds, <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyeconomy.org\/article\/on-hayeks-kinds-of-order-in-society-part-i\/\">spontaneous order<\/a>, not centralized control, produces both efficiency and resilience. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.econlib.org\/the-war-on-prices\/\">Allowing prices<\/a> to signal scarcity and opportunity will attract the investment necessary to balance America\u2019s energy equation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Freedom to Compute<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>In the end, the debate over data centers and electricity bills is really about the freedom to compute. The same economic laws that governed the Industrial Revolution still apply: productivity rises when entrepreneurs can transform energy into work \u2014 whether mechanical or digital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Artificial intelligence may be virtual, but its foundations are unmistakably physical. To sustain the AI boom without bankrupting ratepayers, the United States must choose policies that unleash energy production rather than constrict it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccloud\u201d will always have a power bill.
